I think I posted this a while before, but it came up on my google alerts recently. It is an interview with “Bunraku” producer, Ram Bergman and his thoughts on shooting a film in Romania. It is a nice read.

The $25m action-adventure film starring Demi Moore and Josh Hartnett shot at Media Pro Studios in Romania for 12 weeks in summer 2008. The film is produced by director Guy Moshe’s Los Angeles-based Picturesque Films, Los Angeles-based Ram Bergman Productions and is fully financed by Keith Calder’s Los Angeles-based Snoot Entertainment.

Why did you choose to shoot in Romania?
We needed a lot of stages available because the whole movie is green-screen and we had to build 30-something sets. We needed to take control of a space for five months.

What were your cost savings?
It was probably 10%-20% cheaper than Prague. We did not want to pay top dollar, like you would pay in London or, to a lesser degree, in Prague or Hungary. Bulgaria and Serbia are potentially 10% cheaper than Romania.

Did you use local crews or bring in crew?
We brought in heads of departments but the rest of the crew was Romanian.
But at the time the dollar was so weak that flying in and paying crew then from the US was as cheap as hiring people from elsewhere in Europe.

Which local person or company was indispensable?
Media Pro Studios. It had the most stages available and it made us a deal that was fair and within our budget.

What advice would you give a producer considering a shoot in Romania?
You need to expect certain things are not going to go in the most typical way. Set up your goals and expectations, what you’re willing to spend, and what you expect to get in return, and you’ll be fine. Also, if you’re shooting at Media Pro and you’re staying in Bucharest, you’re going to have a long drive and you’ll lose part of every day.

Would you shoot in Romania again?
Yes. I’m exploring making another movie there in two months.

Josh Hartnett kept warm with multiple layers and a hood while running errands around NYC yesterday. He walked downtown to pick up his dry cleaning before hailing a cab. He’s been keeping a low profile lately between projects, and he may be making time for a new puppy to love! Josh is also letting his facial hair get a little scruffy — though we hope he doesn’t join the celebrity beard trend by covering up that hot face.

“Nobody” has been a success and is now a local cult film:

The film held a world premiere in Minneapolis in October 2009 to great success. Since its release, “nobody” became a local cult favorite. The film even sold out after only a few days on the shelves at the Minneapolis music and entertainment store the Electric Fetus. “nobody” also has a growing following on Facebook with weekly contests for free DVDs, and boy what a DVD it is.

The DVD boasts a whole slew of features, including pithy and insightful commentary by Rob Perez and Ryan Miller, the film’s writers. For fans aching for more “nobody,” there is a behind the scenes featurette along with a schmorgasbord of deleted scenes from the film’s theatrical cut. The DVD also includes an extensive image gallery filled with film stills and photographs documenting life behind the camera. Finally, as an extra bonus, there are two short films included, including one about how Josh Hartnett (one of the film’s executive producers) has a haunted house.

Though “nobody” only graced the metro’s screens for a few short months, the DVD release will guarantee its place in film posterity. Many of those involved in making the film have moved on, some becoming rising stars, others solidifying their place as film icons and others yet branching out into new directions in the entertainment industry. One of the film’s more notable success stories centers upon Sam Rosen, who plays Lindeman in “nobody.” In the upcoming years, Rosen will star in a handful of independent and larger films, including another collaboration with Josh Hartnett.

“nobody” shows audiences that inspiration and brilliance are hiding just around the corner. You just have to look hard enough.

And Josh is involved in two more projects with Sam Rosen, “Stuck Between Stations” and “Ham Lake“. Josh is has a supporting role for “Stuck Between Stations” and is a producer in “Ham Lake”. Here is an article about “Stuck Between Stations”:

The script for Stuck Between Stations was co-written by Minneapolis native Nat Bennett and male lead Sam Rosen (Casper). Independent film veteran Zoe Lister Jones (Rebecca) plays the female lead. The supporting cast includes Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down, Sin City) and Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos, Life on Mars).

Stuck Between Stations tells a coming-of-age/came-and-went story about Casper, a soldier haunted by the horrors of war, and Rebecca, a whip-smart grad student with a shaky future. A decade after they graduated from high school and went their separate ways, they reunite by chance and get to know each other over the course of an accidental tour of the little-known underbelly of Minneapolis. The evening’s odyssey includes a bar fight, a house party, a punk-rock circus, a spontaneous burglary, a home Casper didn’t know he had, and a cast of strange characters, unexpected allies and disappointing friends.

RKB Pictures, LLC was founded by star/writer Sam Rosen, director/producer Brady Kiernan and writer Nat Bennett. The company was formed in Minnesota during August, 2009 to produce Stuck Between Stations.

Josh looks really young back then hahaha. You can also watch the two scenes of Josh in “Sin City” HERE. And if you are interested, you can watch the DVD making-of promotional video here.

In other movies news, I was on the wikipedia page for Josh’s upcoming movie, Bunraku. And there are a lot of information added there since the last time I went on that page. I have already posted most of the info there on this site in several different posts. But it is nice to re-read it and have all the info converged in one area. Now, I’m really excited for this movie!
Go to the BUNRAKU WIKI page here.

I will start updating pages around the site of Josh’s upcoming films and projects that he has done over the past year.
