Josh Hartnett Celebrity Playlist
Release Date: Jun 24, 2008

Track 1: “The Modern Age” – the Strokes

“I have a new film coming out set in August 2001 in New York. It’s about the collapse of an enormously successful dot-com, and the collapse of one of the two brothers who founded it. The movie is called August, appropriately, and will be coming out in theaters starting July 11th. I chose this song because no one could escape the Strokes in 2001”

Track 2: “Sound and Vision” – David Bowie

“Aside from the obvious reason this is included on the list, it’s one of my favorite Bowie songs. While we were filming, I watched all of Bowie’s old videos and it increased my intimidation level ten fold by the time he showed up on set”

Track 3: “Girls” – Beastie Boys

“I tried to put songs by bands that were both around New York in 2002 and songs that inspired that scene. Beastie Boys obviously had a huge influence”

Track 4: “Success” – Iggy Pop

“ Ditto. And success is a major theme of the movie”

Track 5: “Fell In love with a girl” – The White Stripes

“Coolest video of all time, and this song was everywhere when it came out in 2001. I still cannot stop listening to this album”

Track 6: “New World Water” – Mos Def

“Album came out in 1999, but I was listening to this a lot in 2001. Mos Defs reps Brooklyn.”

Track 7: “NYC” – Interpol

“Awesome band. Their first album came out in 2001. Their look kind of inspired the look of my character. Kind of.”

Track 8: “Beat On the Brat” – The Ramones

“One of my favorite Ramones songs. They made the New York punk scene. Joey Ramone died in April of 2001 and I was listening to a lot of them at the time.”

Track 9: “Pale Blue Eyes” – The Velvet Underground

“Great song, great band. I used to listen to their albums as loud as my boom box would play them when I first moved to New York. Lou Reed: rock star.”

Track 10: “Y Control” – Yeah Yeah Yeahs

“This song did not come out until 2003 but their first EP, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, came out in 2001 and they were playing all over in NYC. They were the coolest band at the time and my character in August would have trade to date Karen O.”

Track 11: “Police & Thieves” – The Clash

“Only British band on the New York list but their song was used in my favorite movie of 2001, the Royal Tenenbaums which is set in New York so I thought I could get away with it.”

Track 12: “Chelsea Hotel No.2” – Leonard Cohen

“The ultimate New York City musician. And one of my favorite sad songs. A weeper for the credits.”
