Synopsis:
Based on the 1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES tells the dreamlike tale of the Lisbons, a family living in a sheltered 1970s suburbia. When Cecilia (Hannah Hall), the youngest of the five teenage Lisbon daughters, inexplicably commits suicide, the rest of the family--Mr. Lisbon (James Woods), an awkward high school math teacher; Mrs. Lisbon (Kathleen Turner), a stern, humorless housewife; and the four remaining sisters: Lux (Kirsten Dunst), Bonnie (Chelse Swain), Mary (A.J. Cook), and Therese (Leslie Hayman)--recedes into a morbid cloud of repression and denial. As the girls are forced to retreat from everyday life by their conservative mother, they become the subject of fascination for a group of neighborhood boys, who narrate the story and hope to rescue the girls from their listless confinement.

The first feature by director-screenwriter Sofia Coppola (Francis Ford Coppola's daughter), THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is a mesmerizingly atmospheric film that perfectly captures both the moody tone of the book and the light-saturated feel of the 1970s. Dunst gives a standout performance as the promiscuous Lux, who becomes the sole obsession of high school ladies' man Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett). The movie also includes cameos by Danny DeVito and Scott Glenn. In addition to songs by Heart and Todd Rundgren, the film features an evocative score by the French duo Air.

Trivia
+ When the boys and girls are calling each other to play songs on the record player, they don't use the standard '555-' phone numbers used in television and film.
+ After she had written the script, Sofia Coppola was heartbroken to discover that another company was already producing an adaptation of the book themselves. However, they were not happy with their script, so she showed them hers and they ended up using it instead.
+ A world map, using the far less common Gall-Peters projection, can be seen in background in the scene where the boys exchange songs with the Lisbon sisters over the telephone.
+ Sofia Coppola played Kathleen Turner's little sister in "Peggy Sue Got Married" in 1986 (directed by her father, Francis Ford Coppola). Sofia then directed Turner in this.
+ Sofia Coppola's trademark is "sun through leaves".
+ The first feature by director-screenwriter Sofia Coppola (Francis Ford Coppola's daughter).
+ The movie spoofs Melody (1971), The Stepford Wives (1975) and Carrie (1976).
+ When Josh Hartnett turned 20 on The Virgin Suicides set, director Sofia Coppola gave him a bottle of wine from her father Francis Ford Coppola's private cellar. On the label she wrote: "Congratulations Josh – teen idol no more."
+ Josh wore a wig to play Trip Foutaine.
Goofs and Mistakes
+ Revealing mistakes: During football practice, right after Kevin Head offers Trip three joints to take one of the Lisbon girls to homecoming, the shadow of the boom pole is visible on Trip's head and back.
+ Anachronisms: When Lux and Tripp are crowned at the homecoming dance, "Come Sail Away" is playing. This song was not released until the 1977 Grand Illusion album while the movie is set in 1974-1975.
+ Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Mr. Lisbon is telling the girls the names of the boys who will be taking them to the dance, he refers to one boy as "Jake Connelly" when later on the same boy is referred to as Joe Hill Connelly (which is the name of the character in the novel). This could be an error on the part of the character (and not the actor's error or a script error).
+ Audio/visual unsynchronized: When the girls' father takes a picture of them, we hear the whine of a flash charging, but dad's Instamatic doesn't have an electronic flash - it uses a flashcube.
+ Continuity: The amount of peach schnapps in the bottle changes from almost half empty to full when Trip hands the bottle to Lux's sister.
+ Factual errors: In the scenes in Mr. Lisbon's classroom there is a banner above the chalkboard that displays an incorrect value of pi.
+ Continuity: Lux's pants change from when she gets up from the couch in the living room to the shot of her showing Trip the door.
Quotes
+ Doctor: What are you doing here, honey? You're not even old enough to know how bad life gets.
Cecilia: Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a 13-year-old girl.

+ Trip Fontaine: You're a stone fox.

+ Doctor: Tell me what these remind you of
[holds up an ink blot card]
Cecilia: A banana.
[the doctor holds up another ink blot card]
Cecilia: A swamp.
[the doctor holds up another ink blot card]
Cecilia: An afro.

+ Narrator: In the end, Parkie won because of the Cadillac, Kevin Head because he had the killer weed, and Joe Hill Conley because he won all the school prizes which Trip thought would impress Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon.

+ Narrator: No one could understand how Mrs. Lisbon and Mr. Lisbon, our math teacher, could produce such beautiful creatures.
