Trivia
+ Director Ron Shelton met co-writer Robert Souza on Dark Blue (2002). A former cop, Souza was an adviser. Shelton was so impressed, he asked him to help co-write his next film.
+ Joe Gavilan's frequently heard cell phone ring is the opening riff of "My Girl", while K.C. Calden's phone plays "Funkytown".
+ Gavilan is based on Robert Souza, who was a homicide detective in the LAPD Hollywood Division and moonlighted as a real estate broker in his final ten years on the job. The scene where a cuffed crook steals the gun from a patrol officer's belt and starts shooting it off in the parking lot actually happened during Souza's tenure.
+ H20Klick is really the 504 Boys, a New Orleans-based hip-hop group that Master P produces.
+ The subplot of Gavilan trying to sell Jerry Duran's house to Julius Armas is based on Robert Souza's real-life attempt to sell Robert Evans' house to Dodi Fayed, who was in the music business at the time and for whom Souza did bodyguard work for.
+ The hip-hop club was also used as the base of operations in Ocean's Eleven (2001) according to Ron Shelton.
+ According to the DVD-commentary the roles that Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett play in the movie are almost reversed in real life. Gavilan (Ford) is a good shoot and almost a stunt driver. Calden is a lousy shoot and driver. In reality Ford does not like guns and is a very poor shoot at best while Hartnett is a very good marksmen, having been through actor basic training for two other movies (Pearl Harbor (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001)) twice. Hartnett on the other hand does not like to drive while Ford is, according to Ron Shelton, "...a maniac behind the steering wheel".
+ The film was originally going to be a drama before 'Marion 'Suge' Knight' complained to the producers. The film was subsequently turned into a comedy.
+ The film spoofs "Blade Runner"
Goofs and Mistakes
+ Continuity: The dents on the passenger side of K. C. Calden's car disappear during the chase.
+ Continuity: During the "Street Car Named Desire" K.C.'s shirt is ripped, but in the next shot it is intact.
+ Factual errors: When Joe Gavilan is reading the local newspaper and the headline says that he and KC Calden are under investigation for their conduct, two other headlines include the words "Iraqui" and "Viet Nam". An American newspaper would spell those words "Iraqi" and "Vietnam", respectively.
+ Continuity: When Shawna kisses K.C. after the yoga class, the lipstick mark on his cheek disappears and reappears between shots as he talks to Joe.
+ Revealing mistakes: Obvious stuntman for Gavilan during the fight on the roof.
+ Crew or equipment visible: When Detective Gavilan enters the house on Mount Olympus to dine with Ruby, an actor's mark is visible on the floor.
Quotes
+ K.C.: I know you're gonna say it's none of my business, but when's the last time you got laid?
Joe Gavilan: None of your business.

+ Van Family Son: We're gonna die. I know we're going to die.
K.C.: Yes, actually. We, we will die.
Van Family Mom: No, you're not gonna die.
K.C.: I don't mean right now.

+ K.C.: It's not about the sex.
[Joe Gavilan just looks at him]
K.C.: OK, so I got into it for the sex, but it's not about that anymore.

+ K.C.: Well, what do you think?
Joe Gavilan: Write this down.
[K.C. grabs his pad and pen]
Joe Gavilan: Cheeseburger, well done. Raw onion, pickle, ketchup. Nothing else.
K.C.: Got it. Officer, it's time to get rolling on some chow. This is what the big dog wants, and I want tomato and cucumber on whole wheat with only mustard and bean sprouts.

+ Joe Gavilan: Goddammit! Idiot! That's it! That's it! I'm driving! That's it!
K.C.: All right, all right fine! You think you can do better? Go ahead, be my guest!
Joe Gavilan: Dammnit! Trying to kill us!
K.C.: All right, go!
Joe Gavilan: Idiot!
K.C.: Go ahead!

+ [Joe and K.C. leave the L.A.P.D. Parker Center Station]
Joe Gavilan: What the hell is going on? Did you say anything in there?
K.C.: Of course not. You?
Joe Gavilan: My phone wouldn't stop ringing.
Leon: Joe! K.C.!
Joe Gavilan: This is insane. Can you figure this out?
Leon: [angry] No... but I played my last card buying you a couple of hours, so YOU can figure it out!

+ K.C.: I don't think I want to be a cop anymore.
Joe Gavilan: Then what do you want to be?
K.C.: I want to be an actor.
Joe Gavilan: [shrugs] You're gay. I can deal with that.

+ K.C.: How did you find me?
Joe Gavilan: I'm psychic.
K.C.: [amazed] Really?
Joe Gavilan: No, not really. I'm a detective for Pete's sake.
