Synopsis:
Based on the best-selling book detailing a near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993 where nearly 100 U.S. Army Rangers, commanded by Capt. Mike Steele, were dropped by helicopter deep into the capital city of Mogadishu to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord which lead to a large and drawn-out firefight between the Rangers and hundreds of Somali gunmen which led to the destruction of two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters in Mogadishu, and the heroic efforts by various Rangers to get to them, centering on Sgt. Eversmann, commanding one Ranger unit named Chalk Four, leading Rangers to the first black hawk crash site, to Warrant Officer Durant who was only survivor of the second black hawk crash site and whom was captured, to Col. McKnight who leads a rescue convoy for the Rangers only to get lost within the hostile city, to Sgt. Sanderson desperately trying to get to the first crash site, to Staff Sgt. Yurek who leads two fellow Rangers, Nelson and Twombly to meet with up their squad, Chalk Four, at the first crash site, to many others involved who where either killed or survived.

Trivia
+ Josh Hartnett, 'Sizmore, Tom' , 'Bremner, Ewan' William Fichtner and Kim Coates all previously worked together in another movie about war, Pearl Harbor (2001).
+ Disney passed on distributing this film because of its violent R rating. Its eventual distributor, Revolution, is run by ex-Disney studios chairman Joe Roth.
+ Despite the fact that Ken Nolan is the only credited writer there were others that contributed uncredited. Sam Shepard wrote a some pages of dialogue, but they were not used; 'Eric Roth' wrote crucial speeches for Josh Hartnett and 'Eric Bana' to deliver in the closing minutes; Steven Zaillian made a dialogue-driven rewrite; and Stephen Gaghan did one rewrite early on in the development. Nolan was the writer on the set for four months, and worked on the script for over two years. Prior to WGA arbitration, promotional materials for the film (such as theatrical posters) credited the screenplay to both Ken Nolan and Steven Zaillian. This was later changed to award sole credit to Ken Nolan.
+ The photo of a wife and child that one of the soldiers is looking at is actually a photo of Eric Bana's wife and child. The props department forgot to take a photo of a wife and child with them, so asked Bana's wife and child who were traveling with him if they could use a photo of them in the movie.
+ Ben Foster had to drop out of the role as Cpl. James 'Jamie' Smith due to a serious injury sustained during basic training.
+ When Orlando Bloom auditioned for the role, he informed the casting directors that he knew what it was like to break his back (as he had done so only a couple of years before when climbing out on a drain pipe from a friend's flat). His character in this movie breaks his back after falling from the helicopter.
+ Before shooting began in Pearl Harbor, a Hawaiian priest blessed the crew - a practice recommended by local custom for film crews shooting in Hawaii.
+ According to Josh, he felt that the boot camp he did for BHD was easier than the one he did for Pearl Harbor.
Goofs and Mistakes
+ Incorrectly regarded as goofs: As with any "based on a true story" movie, especially one involving complex military operations, there are many ways in which the plot of the movie differs from the actual events. The exigencies of dramatic storytelling also require that certain practices and procedures are not accurately portrayed. Though, technically, these might be thought of as goofs, it's a movie, not a documentary.
+ Anachronisms: One of the soldiers is seen wearing a pair of Oakley "X-Metal Juliet" sunglasses. These glasses were not released until 2000.
+ Audio/visual unsynchronized: Numerous times in the film when any helicopter lands, we hear the familiar chirp-chirp-chirp sound. This is characteristic only of the famous Bell 47G (the MASH chopper), and then only of the rubber drive belt disengaging from the rotor column.
+ Crew or equipment visible: When Eversmann and his men are running back to the their base, he dodges some gun fire and squats behind an old car for cover. As he does so, his "mark" is visible on the road at the spot where he stops running and dodges behind the car.
+ Errors in geography: When the soldiers are waiting for the mission to get underway they are discussing the details while shooting baskets, in the background there is a group of farm houses set in a green field.
+ Continuity: When Sgt. Eversmann is talking to Captain Steele about a medevac for Cpl. Smith, the soldier behind Steele appears to be dead with blood all over his face. Although, when Steele radios to the chopper circling overhead, the same man is alive and holding up two IV bags, with no trace of blood on his mouth.
+ Continuity: After Blackburn falls, Eversmann ropes out of the helicopter. When he begins down the rope, another Ranger grabs the rope to descend after him. However, the long shot of the rope and the scene after Eversmann reaches the ground indicate no one was following him.
Quotes
+ Eversmann: Nobody asks to be a hero, it just sometimes turns out that way.

+ Smith: I'm sorry.
Eversmann: You have nothing to be sorry about. You saved Twombly, you did it perfect.
Smith: You okay Twombs?
Twombly: Yeah, I'm okay, Jamie.
Eversmann: See, you did what you were trained to do. You should be proud of that, be proud of that.
Smith: Ev?
Eversmann: Yeah.
Smith: Do me a favor, okay? Tell my parents that I fought well today. And tell them that I... that I... that I fought hard.
Eversmann: You're gonna tell them yourself okay, Jamie?
Smith: Are... are the humvees here?
Eversmann: They're coming, Jamie. They're coming. You just gotta hold on for a little longer. Can you do that?
Smith: I can, I can. It's nothing. It's nothing.

+ Eversmann: Remember, we're Rangers not some sorry-ass JROTC. We're Elite. Let's act like it out there. Hoo-ah?
Rangers: Hoo-ah!

+ Eversmann: Look, these people, they have no jobs, no food, no education, no future. I just figure that we have two things we can do. Help, or we can sit back and watch a country destroy itself on CNN.

+ Eversmann: You okay?
Todd Blackburn: Excited. In a good way. I've been training my whole life for this.
Eversmann: You ever shot at anybody before?
Todd Blackburn: No Sergeant.
Eversmann: Me neither. + Rafe: Dolittle assigned me. He wanted me to get some... some real combat training.

+ Eversmann: You know, it's kind of funny. Beautiful beach, beautiful sun. Could almost be a nice place to visit.
