| Trivia |
+ Adaptation of "30 Days of Night" graphic novel by Steve
Niles
+ Filming took 70 days, as scheduled.
+ According to David Slade, veteran director Sam Raimi was slated to direct the film when the script was in its earliest stages; then Raimi opted to produce instead.
+ WILHELM SCREAM: Heard after man is thrown off metal roof by vampire during the initial attacks on Barrow.
+ Prints were shipped to some theaters under the fake title "Red Impression".
+ A picture of Steve Niles, who wrote the original comic book, hangs in the attic hideout.
+ Writer Steve Niles originally conceived and pitched the story as a film for some years, but it was turned down by studios and thus reworked as a comic book. Eventually one of the producers who had rejected the original pitch worked on the movie adaptation.
+ According to the DVD commentary, Josh Hartnett was sick with mono for two weeks of film. During that two week period, he had to fly to Venice, London, New York and Los Angeles for the premiers of The Black Dahlia (2006).
+ Josh Hartnett did his own stunts, and Melissa George did most of Stella's driving.
+ The scenes where characters are driving on the road out of town at night were actually shot during the day.
+ SPOILER: In the original script, the Stranger was killed off along with the grandmother. The scenes where Eben and Stella find him in the station, and then when Marlow comes back to him, were written during production and squeezed in the shooting schedule with the understanding that they would most likely go unused.
+ The vampire who bites Billy and dies in the utilidor is seen later in an
close up shot during the fight between Eben and Marlow.
+ The instrumental version of the song "Apocalypse Please" by Muse is played
in the trailer.
+ The Stranger has a Cajun accent that is specific to certain parts of New
Orleans in Louisiana. Per director David Slade, Ben Foster, who plays The
Stranger, spent his own money to consult a dialect coach and learn to
imitate a Cajun accent. Slade believed that, due to the film's extreme
northern setting, someone with a southern accent would seem especially
alien.
+ In July 2002, Senator International acquired the rights for 30 Days of
Night in a seven figure deal with Raimi and Tapert attached as
producers.
+ In February 2003, Columbia Pictures partnered with Senator International
to work on 30 Days of Night, which was developing under Senator
internationals newly-established production company, Ghost House Pictures.
+ In May 2003, Stuart Beattie, one of the writers for Pirates of the
Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was rewriting Niles's 30
Days of Night draft for production. Niles was pleased with Beattie's
faithfully rewritten script, which was submitted to the studio in October
2004.
+ In September 2005, it was announced that director David Slade had signed
on to 30 Days of Night.
+ In March 2006, Slade revealed that screenwriter Brian Nelson, who wrote
the screenplay for Slade's previous film Hard Candy, was writing a
new draft of the 30 Days of Night script, replacing Beattie's draft
+ Josh joined the cast in June 2006.
+ By February 2007, the production phase was completed, and a rough cut of
the film was prepared. |
| Goofs and Mistakes |
+ Errors in geography: Barrow, Alaska is exactly
201 miles from the Alaskan Pipeline.
+ Factual errors: In Barrow, the sun doesn't come back above the
horizon for 67 days, but it still gets somewhat light between noon and 4:00
p.m.. It does not stay pitch black, as represented in the film.
+ Continuity: In the first scene where Eben walks into the sheriff's
office and takes off his hat, his hair goes from sticking up to well combed
to sticking up again.
+ Factual errors: Alaska has no sheriffs; all law enforcement is
handled by state troopers or bureau police departments.
+ Factual errors: Everyone is eager to get the "last flight out"
before the airport closes down for 30 days. The airport may close for
occasional storms, but it never shuts down for 30 days. Alaska Airlines
flies to Barrow at least once a day all year.
+ Factual errors: The sign for Barrow lists a population of 563. The
town actually has more than 4,000 people.
+ Factual errors: In the diner, Lucy tells the stranger that no
alcohol is allowed during the 30 day break. Barrow is a "damp" town all
year; alcohol sales are not legal, but consumption and import are.
+ Factual errors: One day in full bright sunshine and the next day in
total darkness is a totally inaccurate depiction. Total darkness for many
days and then suddenly a full and normal sunrise is not how it works near
the poles. As the days gets shorter, sunrise comes later and sunset comes
earlier. Eventually you start to get days where the sun barely peaks over
the horizon with a few hours of twilight. Even when you reach the middle of
this long "dark" period, you'll still have some hours twilight with the sun
just under the horizon. Eventually the sun will peek out over the horizon
just a little more on each new day as the sunrises come earlier and the
sunsets come later.
+ Revealing mistakes: SPOILER: During the blizzard, when the group is
moving from the attic to the general store, the wind is raging, yet the
power lines are not moving. No ice has accumulated on the lines, so they
aren't frozen solid. |
| Quotes |
+ The Stranger: Mr. and Mrs. Sheriff. So sweet. So
helpless against what is coming.
Stella Oleson: He's just trying to freak us out.
Jake Oleson: It's working.
Sheriff Eben Oleson: We have more important things to think about.
I'll check on Gus.
The Stranger: Check on Gus. Board the windows. Try to hide. They're
coming. This time they're gonna take me with them... honor me. Yeah. For all
that I have done.
Sheriff Eben Oleson: They? Who are they? + Sheriff Eben Oleson:
Hell of a day.
The Stranger: Just you wait.
+ Sheriff Eben Oleson: [yelling to distract the
vampires] Come on, motherfuckers!
+ The Stranger: They didn't take me.
Sheriff Eben Oleson: Who did they take?
The Stranger: [upset] They didn't take me!
+ Little Girl Vampire: I'm done playing with this one. You want to
play with me now? .
+ Marlow: [speaking in vampire language] That
which can be broken must be broken.
+ Sheriff Eben Oleson: All right, time to talk. Who are you here
with? Who are you here with?
[the Strangers whimpers in pain]
Sheriff Eben Oleson: Who did that to Gus?
The Stranger: You're a dead man.
Sheriff Eben Oleson: Where are they?
The Stranger: [while foaming at the mouth] I
don't talk to dead men. I don't talk to dead men!
Sheriff Eben Oleson: Well, if I'm dead no one lets you loose from
here.
The Stranger: You're all dead! |
